Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by huge industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is really important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging area. The route to the station should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open fire are prohibited. Never allow things such as lighters or matches to be used while somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
