Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which can only be accessed by authorized personnel. It is vital for the safety of the operator, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task could use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also should be trained to effectively and safely use the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a lift truck must be properly trained. This training includes a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. After finishing the training session, the person must be tested in order to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the correct method of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also includes site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located inside the facility where the forklift is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This would also cover the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the forklift battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all workers at all times. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a doctor if you fear it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
